You are what you eat!
Food is indispensable for survival. However, improper diet is also one of the main causes of disease in nowadays society.
Improper diets lead to the injury of the Spleen and Stomach. Therefore prohibiting them to properly receive, digest, transport and transform food. This will further lead to the disorder of qi, blood and body fluids. Finally, the organs and physiological functions of the body will be damaged.
Below shows the types of improper diet.
Overeating
This is very common in today’s society. Nowadays many people eat more than what the spleen and stomach can digest. This could lead to the impairment of the spleen and stomach.
The prolonged accumulation of undigested food could lead to epigastric pain, abdominal fullness, belching, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.
Excessive Hunger
Insufficient eating causes malnutrition which will lead to the failure of generating Qi and Blood. Thus resulting in a lack of vital energy and weakened body resistance.
This will lead to loss of weight, lack of strength, fatigue, and susceptible to the attack of various pathogenic factors.
Unhygienic Food
Unclean or spoiled food may cause the impairment of the spleen and stomach, leading to nausea, vomiting, pain and distention in the abdominal regions, diarrhea, etc. In severe cases, it may lead to death.
Food Predilection
Food predilection means there is a preference for certain types of food. Remember in Chinese Medicine, Balance is the key. Over consuming in one particular type of food may result in malnutrition or diseases.
Wrong Season
With advanced technology today, we can eat anything at any time of the year. However, in Chinese Medicine it is unhealthy to eat non-seasonal foods.
Seasonal food means the food is naturally ripe at that particular season. With the advanced transportation industry, together with greenhouse technology, we can eat “winter foods” in summer and “summer foods” in winter.
Nature purposely allows us to consume different food throughout the year to help balance our bodies’ Yin and Yang.
For example, watermelon is naturally being riped in the summer since watermelon is “cool” in nature and that can balance out the “summerheat”. However if it is being eaten in winter, there will be an excess of “Cold” in the body.
Wrong Body Type
Everyone is different. Everyone has their own specific body constitution. Therefore everyone should be eating differently.
One food might be very healthy for you, but it might be poisonous to me.
In Chinese Medicine, there are nine basic body constitutions. Each type has its own specific properties thus each type has its own “Good” and “Bad” food.
In future articles, I will be explaining the nine different body types in detail so you can check and determine which type you are. Thus you can avoid food that is harmful for your body type or even create a specific menu for yourself.
In Chinese Medicine, nothing is absolute!
There is no “Best Superfood”! It all depends on “who you are”, “when you eat”, and “how you eat”!
Up next, I will be discussing about Improper Work and Rest. Stay-tuned!
