Home Remedies For Tinnitus – Get Rid Of The Annoying Ringing In The Ears

Tinnitus is affecting millions of people worldwide. It is estimated that about 30% of the population will experience tinnitus at some point of their lives.

Lately I have a couple new patients who came in for treating tinnitus, that inspired me to write this article since home remedies are an important factor in the healing process.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the hearing of the sound but the sound has no external source. The typical sounds people with tinnitus hear are:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • Humming
  • Roaring
  • Hissing

Some patients hear it occasionally, but some hear it 24/7. This is very annoying and affects their lives tremendously.

Why does Tinnitus occur?

From a Chinese Medicine theory point of view, the below are the main causes of Tinnitus.

  1. Blockage of the ‘ShaoYang’ Meridians – There are two ‘ShaoYang’ meridians, the ‘Gallbladder Meridian’ and the ‘Triple Burner Meridian’. These meridians run around the ears. Anger or stress could lead to the blockage of these meridians thus affecting the ears and causing tinnitus.
  2. Qi-Blood Deficiency – Due to longterm sickness or aging, the Qi and Blood is deficient in one’s body, leading to insufficient kidney-essence to nourish the ears. Thus leading to tinnitus.
  3. A sudden or long-term exposure to extreme loud noise causing damage to the ears.

Home Remedies for Tinnitus

As seen in the previous paragraph, tinnitus can be caused or worsened by a lot of factors. Therefore every little habits we have in our daily lives could contribute to the healing or the worsening of tinnitus. Below are some home remedies, and each of them adds up.

Some people can get significant improvements in a week or two by following the below remedies. However there are also patients, especially those who have tinnitus for a longer period of time, that could take up to months to start seeing results. Therefore I advise patients to be patient. Healing is a process and it does take time. Be confident, and don’t give up!

1. Environment Control

Loud noise exposure can worsen the tinnitus situation. Therefore preventing exposure to such environment is very important. If for any reason that this is not possible, ensure wearing hearing protection to minimize the noise affect the ears.

Also tinnitus can lead to hearing loss. And some people would turn the music on loud to compensate. This is to be avoided since although the music does not seem loud, it could further damage the ears.

Furthermore people using headphones need to prevent listening at a high volume or listening for too long.

2. Avoid Picking Ears

Picking ears increases the chance of damaging the ear canal and ear drums. Therefore even though it is tempting to pick the ears (to remove ear wax for example), it is best to go see a specialist and have them help you.

3. Sleep and Rest

Sleep is very important for recovery. It is not only sleeping quality that is important, but sleeping time.

It is important to be asleep before 11pm every night. This is because 11pm-1am is the time of the Gall Bladder Meridian. And 1-3am is the time of Liver Meridian. This is the time for our body to be recovered fully.

If not asleep during this time, it can cause excess Fire in the gall bladder meridian which could worsen the tinnitus condition.

4. Stress Management

Stress can cause the blockage of the meridians, thus worsening the tinnitus. Therefore Stress management is an important daily routine. Below are some activities that are great in reducing stress.

  • Get a Massage
  • Tai Chi Exercises
  • Qi Gong Exercises
  • Yoga
  • Listening to Relaxing Music
  • Watch a Movie
  • Talk to Friends

Mediation or breathing exercises are also great to help relax the mind and body. Here is a basic abdominal breathing for beginners that can help:

5. Exercise

Doing exercise can help to improve the overall health. It can also help to reduce stress and improve sleep.

Any exercise is great, but since in a lot of cases tinnitus is related to the ‘Kidney’ function in Chinese Medicine, I recommend doing some Qi Gong exercise that can boost the ‘Kidney’ function. Below is a video that can help:

6. Diet

First of all, there are some foods that need to be avoided:

  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Avoid Spicy Food
  • Avoid Fried Food

And these are some of the food that can be consumed: Seaweed, Black Fungus, Black Sesame.

7. Self-Massage

Below is a video about 7 different massage techniques that are helpful for tinnitus. Try to do that 2-3 times a day.

Golden Time for Treating Tinnitus

The golden time for treating tinnitus is within the first three months. And the sooner the better, since the longer the wait, the harder it is to treat.

I would recommend anyone who has tinnitus to seek a medical profession immediately. In my opinion it is best to combine both western and Chinese medicine in dealing with tinnitus.
