Acupuncture: How it works, Benefits, and Risks

As an acupuncturist, the most common question I get from patients or friends is “Does Acupuncture work?” So in this article, I would like to give an introduction to Acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles into one’s body for healing effects. It was developed in ancient China over 2500 years ago.

Even though it is an ancient method of treating diseases, it is still very effective and applicable in today’s world.

What Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture can treat a broad range of conditions. Below are the most common reasons why people go see an acupuncturist

  • Muscle and Joint Pain
  • Headaches/ Migraines
  • Cardiovascular Issues
  • Digestive Issues (such as stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, IBS etc.)
  • Respiratory Issues
  • Fertility
  • Stress Relieve/ Depression/ Anxiety

Now you might think, this seems unbelievable! How come a thin needle can solve all sorts of different issues in our bodies?

Why Does Acupuncture Work?

There are two ways to explain why Acupuncture works. 1) The Classical Way, and 2) The Modern Science Way.

Let me first explain using classical theories. In Chinese Medicine theory, one substance that is crucial in our bodies is ‘Qi’. Some people translate it as ‘Energy’, or ‘Life-Force’. In order to survive, we need Qi in our bodies. If the Qi is sufficient and flowing smoothly in our bodies, we will be healthy. But if the Qi is insufficient, or if the Qi is not flowing well and being stuck, then diseases and sickness occur.

The aim of Acupuncture is to balance the flow of energy in our bodies so the Qi flows well. So for example if the Qi is stuck in some parts of our bodies, which causes pain, we do acupuncture to unblock it and make it flow smoothly.

Now that is the simple explanation using classical theory. But what does modern science tell us?

Here are a couple of common theories.

1. Helps Release Endorphin

By sticking needles in our bodies, it stimulates the nerves and the nerves send signals to our brains and tell our brains to release a chemical called endorphin. Endorphin is our body’s natural pain-killer. It does not only relieve pain, but it also helps to reduce stress. That’s why some people call this a “Happy Hormone”

2. Improving Circulation

By doing acupuncture, it promotes circulation to the area. And since it improves blood circulation, it can help with the healing of wounds

3. Reduce Pro-Inflammatory Markers

Some studies have shown that by doing acupuncture, we can significantly decrease the pro-inflammatory markers, which can decrease inflammation and reduce pain in our bodies.

4. Regenerate Nerves

There are also studies that suggest acupuncture could stimulate the brain to secrete some nerve growth factor, which can help the nerve to regenerate. Therefore treating nerve damages in our bodies.

Risks and Side Effects?

The risks and side effects of doing acupuncture are very minimal if done by a properly trained and certified Acupuncturist.

The most important point is that people who are pregnant/ potential pregnant must notify their acupuncturist (though acupuncturist usually asks) since some pressure points could induce labor.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

Acupuncture needles are really thin, and it is usually 10-20 times thinner than injection needles. So acupuncture needles are nothing like when you do a blood test. The most you might feel is a little pinch or pressure.

Conclusion

So this is how Acupuncture works!

Now, if acupuncture is so powerful, why don’t we dispose of all other forms of medicine? No!

Every form of medicine and therapies have their own strengths and limitations. Therefore I think that especially in modern times like this, we should all have an open mind, accept each modality of medicine (such as physiotherapy, naturopathic medicine, kinesiology, and massage therapy) and even better, different medicines work together to help the patients in solving their problems.
