Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is very common nowadays since most people need to work on computers. I often have new patients coming into the clinic and complain about the intense wrist pain they experience and that how it affects their daily lives.
Therefore in this article, I would like to explain some remedies that can help to relieve the pain. But first, what is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage inside the palm side of the wrist. Inside the carpal tunnel, there is a nerve called the ‘Median Nerve’.
When pressure is exerted on the Median Nerve, that will cause ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’, which causes the below symptoms.
- Pain or burning sensation in the hand, which could radiate up the arm.
- Tingling, itching, or numbness in the hand.
- Weakness on the hand and having trouble grabbing things.
In serious cases, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome could cause permanent nerve damage and may result in loss of hand function. Therefore it is important to take this seriously and treat it early.
Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome could be caused by:
- Repetitive movements of the wrist. Such as typing.
- Injuries of the wrist. Such as fractures.
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- High Blood Pressure
Ways to Relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Of course for patients having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it is best to go see a professional, no matter its Doctors, Physiotherapist, or acupuncturists, etc.
However, it is also important for patients to do extra work at home. Below are some home remedies that can help to relieve the pain and promote recovery.
1. Posture
Avoid positions that could overextend your wrist. Wrist splints could also be used, especially at night to hold the position.
2. Keep Your Hands Warm
In Chinese Medicine, ‘Cold’ does not only affect the Qi and Blood circulation in our body, it could also cause ‘contraction’. The contraction will cause more pain.
Therefore our hands need to keep warm. Especially in places where the temperature is cold, make sure to wear gloves outside. We can also use heat pads.
3. Take Breaks
If repetitive movement is part of your work routine, make sure to take short and frequent breaks for your wrist to relax.
4. Pressure Point Massage
There are 5 Pressure Points that have been shown effective in dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In this video, I will show you the exact steps of how to locate and massage these pressure points.
